The Ride-Along is the 17th episode of Season 2, and is episode 39 of the full 210 episodes for the entire series. In this episode, Ray agrees to ride in Robert's police car while he's on duty and witnesses him arresting a gunman.

While watching the show Cops, Robert gets annoyed that Ray is rooting for the criminal to get away. Realizing that Ray doesn't have any idea what Robert goes through as a police officer every day, he suggests Ray ride along in his squad car one night.
Ray, having been amazed at what he witnessed, has New York Newsday write an article about the incident.
This episode has Frank droning on about his time in Korea during the war.
Debra calls Ray an "idiot", as she always does.
Robert mentions the time he had an "afro" haircut. It is unclear whether or not he was referring to the flashback scene from the Season 1 episode "The Car", in which the viewer sees Robert with an afro.
Robert's dog Shamsky makes an appearance in this episode.
Robert also sings a small part of the Dragnet theme music.
In the beginning and end of the episode, when Ray and Robert are on the couch, there is a PlayStation video game console sitting on top of the TV set.
